by Mark Weinrich
There was no April 15 extension
not from the Emperor’s tax,
No pity for Mary’s condition.
There was no other way for them,
not with what Joseph owed;
he had to pay at Bethlehem.
What panic after the tax was paid!
Not a single room in the inn.
Only a stable to ward off the rain.
What desperation before the baby boy,
before the shepherd’s news.
What celebrations of great joy!
Heaven’s ransom, so clean and small
had come to pay taxes
for one and for all.
